Why Do You Need a Backpack Mod?

Vanilla Minecraft's inventory has 36 slots. That's enough for regular survival, but modpacks are a different story.

  • Dozens of ores and alloys
  • Mod-specific materials, crystals, and essences
  • Tools, weapons, food, and potions
  • Byproducts from resource gathering

Even a short expedition fills up your inventory, forcing you to return to base constantly. Backpack mods are essential QoL mods that solve this problem.

Backpack Usage Tips

1. Don't Put Backpacks Inside Backpacks (Most Mods)

Nesting either doesn't work or can cause data loss during recovery. Only a few mods like Iron Backpacks safely support this.

2. Prepare for Death

If you die while wearing a backpack, it drops on the ground. In hardcore modpacks, it's safer to use a Gravestone mod alongside your backpack mod.

3. Use Auto-Pickup Modules

The Pickup + Filter combination in Sophisticated Backpacks saves a lot of time when gathering resources. You can set it to only pick up ores, or only food, etc.

4. Be Careful with Dimension Travel

In some modpacks, backpack contents can disappear or get corrupted when traveling between dimensions. Take out important items beforehand.

5. Shader Compatibility

Backpacks with 3D models (like Traveler's Backpack) may break with certain shaders. If you use shaders, check compatibility in advance.

Conclusion

In modpacks, backpacks are a necessity, not a luxury. Choose a backpack mod that matches your modpack version, and gradually upgrade as you progress.

Unless you have a specific reason not to, Sophisticated Backpacks is the safest choice. It's included by default in nearly every modern modpack and offers the best extensibility.
